The Palace of Fine Arts was never meant to be permanent. Built to house the most important works of the day for San Francisco’s 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition and then torn down, the ornate structure was rendered in plastic and burlap fiber. But the people just couldn’t part with this romantic replica of ancient Greek and Roman ruins at the base of the Golden Gate. The crumbling mess had to be pared down to its steel structure and painstakingly restored, but one century later—thanks to public outcries and a major retrofitting—the Palace still stands.
