Everything old is new again, and again and again – which is the very essence of fashion nostalgia. Since the times of the Romans, looks have been reinvented. Some may have been updated and others changed altogether, but there is still that little piece of nostalgia in almost everything we wear. The feminine and frilly Victorian era is the fashion well many designers have decided is worth revisiting this season. Given the wild popularity of the late and greatly missed already TV show, Downton Abbey, along with our current craze for all things Vampire, a Victoriana trend is a natural. Lady-like ruffles, smocking, soft, elegant lace, high collars, and blouses with bows – it’s all here. The reinvention of Victoriana actually mixes brilliantly with the Boho trend, flirty romantic outfits and dark rock-n-roll edgy styles, we’re seeing this season. One of the most fabulous aspects of this trend is its versatility. If dainty and feminine is your thing, you’ve got it in spades. If you’re drawn to the dark side, pair the look with black or a bold lip and dainty is off the menu. The easiest way to go casual with this look is with a lace turtleneck ruffled white shirt, worn with jeans, or cutoffs eve as the temperatures warm up. For the office pair the same blouse with high waisted, pants and a blazer. For edgy styles that are more punk inspired, opt for tiny round shades, and huge black hats, cowboy boots, and tons of jewelry. The very best news of all if you’re tempted to give Victorian style a spin – no corset or petticoats are required.
“I've admired historical clothes like Victorian gowns since I was a child, and it's what motivated me to go into fashion.” Olivier Theyskens
