It all began with the advent of reality TV, followed by YouTube. Thanks to talent shows like American Idol and The Voice, combined with people’s ability to broadcast themselves to the world on the internet, pop artist Andy Warhol’s prophetic prediction came to pass. “In the future, everybody will be world-famous for 15 minutes.”

The only people who used to dress like rock stars on the street were bona fide rock stars. Now that we’re all a single talent competition win away from fame, dressing like a rock star off-stage, regardless of who you are is not only perfectly acceptable, it’s currently one of the hottest looks for spring.

Vividly colored and patterned embroidery on jackets, dresses, skirts, shirts, shorts – you name it – is a perfect way to get your inner rocker on. Pick one piece and play it up, or go for broke by mixing pieces.

Whether you’re spirit animal star is Ziggy Stardust or Iggy Azalea, glitter is a glam way to get stand out in the crowd, especially if you’re wearing a pair of the sequin skinny pants or brave enough to bare it in sequin hot pants. If you’re feeling slightly more conservative, but still want to sparkle, a sequin jacket with skinny jeans will send the same message without shouting.

If you’re into leather, you’re in luck. Leather in colors from black to prism shades like pale pink, bright blue to lime green, can be found in everything from jackets, vests, skirts, pants and dresses. Some designers are even playing with patterns by embellishing leather with prints.

Heavily distressed jeans, meaning as ripped as they get, are EVERYWHERE now. If you haven’t got any, find a pair in your closet that aren’t your absolute favorite and get busy with the scissors.

When it’s time to strut down the street, slip your feet into some platform or snakeskin boots, embellished satin booties, sky-high, leather platform sandals or heels that have been adorned with every kind of object from bullets to knit flowers to rhinestones to metal studs. If flats are the only shoe that will do for you, don’t despair. Metallic leather loafers with knee socks and either classic Adidas or Converse will do the trick.

Pairing your jewelry to complete the look couldn’t be easier. Stand-out chokersare back in style, along with other oversized, statement necklacesbold cuff bracelets and stackable rings will all have you ready to get your rock star on.
